Is ash content important to know in premium cat foods like Grandma Mae's?  What should I be looking for?

High levels of ash, often found in low quality pet foods, were thought to be a major cause of urinary tract problems in cats.  With a premium food like Grandma Mae's Country Naturals, ash is naturally low and this is not a concern.  The real issue to be concerned with is not the ash content but the proportion of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.  Consumers should look for foods with an approximate ratio of 1.2 or 1.3 Calcium to 1.0 Phosphorus to .06 Magnesium.  Both Grandma Mae's dry and canned cat foods meet these standards.

Feeding Tips

Note that the number one cause of kidney disease especially in older cats is that indoor cats do not drink enough water. Owners must be sure to feed canned food of good quality like ours every day from when they are kittens and be sure they have fresh and clean water (filtered better).

Owners can also add water to can food to help as well  or even dry food if they won't eat wet at first or at all. You can even add low sodium chicken broth and warm up can or dry food with water added as smell would encourage eating more wet food and therefore taking in more water. When you hear kidney disease in cats, think water, water, water!
